Proyek amal tersebut dilakukan untuk membantu korban Badai Katrina yang menghantam New Orleans, Amerika Serikat pada 29 Agustus 2005.
Kedua band tersebut membawakan lagu ini secara langsung dalam acara prapertandingan American Football yang mempertemukan New Orleans Saints versus Atlanta Falcons pada 25 September 2008 di Louisiana Superdome.
Tiket pertunjukan tersebut kemudian dijual secara daring untuk mendukung Music Rising, sebuah badan amal yang dibentuk oleh The Edge dari U2 untuk membawa kembali alat musik dan program musik ke New Orleans.
Lagu itu juga masuk daftar lagu dalam album U2 bertajuk "U218 Singles" yang dirilis pada 20 November 2006, 14 hari setelah dirilis sebagai singel pada 6 November 2006.
Singel tersebut sukses masuk daftar penerima nominasi penghargaan Grammy ke-49 untuk kategori Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal, meski kalah dari Red Hot Chili Peppers yang membawakan lagu berjudul "Dani California".
Namun, lagu orisinal ciptaan vokalis Richard Jobson dan gitaris Stuart Adamson dari grup rock Skotlandia, Skids, itu pertama kali meluncur dalam mini-album (extended play/EP) Skids pada 1978, bertajuk "Wide Open".
Lagu "The Saints Are Coming" yang orisinal bergenre punk rock dengan durasi 2 menit 37 detik itu juga masuk dalam album studio (long play/LP) perdana Skids pada 1979 bertajuk "Scared to Dance".
