Judul "21 Guns" mengacu pada tradisi ala militer meletuskan 21 senjata sebagai bentuk menghormati apa yang telah gugur.
Lirik lagu itu bercerita tentang orang yang menolak beban emosional akibat menempuh perjuangan yang sia-sia dan tidak membawa hasil yang layak, dengan menggantungkan harapan pada persatuan dan solidaritas.
Lagu itu ditulis oleh vokalis Green Day Billie Joe Armstrong, dan mencantumkan nama penyanyi David Robert Jones (dikenal luas dengan nama David Bowie) sebagai pencipta lagu, karena ada kemiripan antara "21 Guns" dengan "All the Young Dudes" ciptaan Bowie.
Personel grup musik Green Day yaitu Billie Joe Armstrong (vokal) bersama Mike Dirnt (gitar), dan Tré Cool (drum) memproduksi lagu itu bersama-sama.
Hingga kini, video musik untuk lagu "21 Guns" yang dirilis sejak 8 Oktober 2009 di kanal Youtube Green Day, telah disaksikan pengguna platform tersebut lebih dari 557 juta kali.
