Vokalis Radiohead Thom Yorke menulis lagu "High and Dry" di University of Exeter pada akhir 1980-an, bersama band lamanya yang berumur pendek, Headless Chickens, menurut laman Rolling Stone.
Dalam sebuah wawancara pada 1996, Yorke mengatakan bahwa awalnya lirik lagu "High and Dry" berkisah tentang seorang gadis yang dia ajak kencan, tetapi setelah beberapa saat, liriknya tercampur dengan gagasan tentang kesuksesan dan kegagalan. Lagu itu dianggap tidak sejalan dengan gaya Radiohead sehingga mereka semula tidak ingin memasukkan "High and Dry" ke dalam album.
Radiohead berubah pikiran, mereka akhirnya menilai "High and Dry" adalah cerminan hal-hal yang pernah mereka lalui.
