Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono emphasized the importance of enhancing the cooperation between countries to tackle the global climate problems.

"We must double our efforts to cooperate with countries to finalize a formal agreement related to the reduction in emissions post 2020," the president said at the UN Climate Summit 2014 in New York on Wednesday (September 24).

A press release from the Foreign Ministry received here on Thursday stated that the President further said that Indonesia, with international assistance, is planning to reduce its emissions to 41 percent by 2020, higher than its previous commitment of 26 percent.

The President expressed his appreciation for the Norwegian government that has worked closely with Indonesia.

"We are very pleased to announce that with the close cooperation with the Norwegian government, we have not only managed to reduce the emissions but also improve the welfare of the local communities," Yudhoyono said.

President Yudhoyono also said that Indonesia was ready to strengthen the bilateral and multilateral ties with other countries to reduce the high emissions level across the globe.

"Indonesia is ready to strengthen the cooperation at bilateral and multilateral levels. We have shown our determination by the signing of a letter of acceptance for the Doha amendment of the Kyoto Protocol," Yudhoyono stated.

In connection with the project to suppress the rise in the global temperatures, Yudhoyono said that Indonesia will explore the blue carbon ecosystem program.

"It is important to restrain the rate of global temperature rise below two degrees Celsius, because coastal countries such as Indonesia could lose vast areas if the temperature rise exceeds that rate," said Yudhoyono.
