Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Indonesia will continue to play its role in global development and in dealing with the threat of climate change, according to President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.
"At the global level, Indonesia will continue to play an active role in sustainable development management. The country always participates in every UN Framework on Climate Change Conference," Yudhoyono said at the State Palace here on Thursday.
In his address at the launch of the Asia Pacific Human Development Report, issued by the UNDP, the head of state stated that Indonesia would actively participate in the global conference in Brazil in June 2012.
The President said Indonesia and other Asia-Pacific countries had been invited to contribute their ideas on sustainable development.
Yudhoyono has also received a special invitation from UN Chief Ban Ki-moon to speak at the High-level Panel of Eminent Persons forum, along with British Prime Minister David Cameron and Liberian President Johnson Sirleaf.
"The speakers at the forum will share their ideas with the UN chief on how to overcome global development challenges that could hamper the achievement of Millennium Development Goals, and to formulate the post-2015 MDG agenda," he said.
According to Yudhoyono, the speakers are also expected to develop a holistic framework to overcome the fundamental challenges facing global development.
The President noted that the UNDP expressed its appreciation to Indonesia because the country had been committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions through the Reducing Emission from Deforestation and Degradation Plus (REDD +) scheme.
"I am glad that the implementation of REDD+ scheme has been appreciated by UNDP and included among `Indonesian Specific Highlights` in the 2012 report," Yudhoyono said.
Indonesia would continue to improve various instruments of REDD+, which include the institutional aspect, funding mechanism, measurement, and verification, he added. (*)
